This week you are making a dessert to practice the 'rubbing-in' method. This traditional dessert combines cooked fruit and crunchy topping, that can be flavoured and adapted to your own taste. Good fruit to use include Bramley (cooking) apples and rhubarb.

Top Tips

- If you chop your fruit up fairly small, there is no need to pre-cook it.

- Rub in the butter with your fingertips so it doesn't melt.

- Ensure your fruit is evenly chopped so it cooks at the same rate.

- Don't chop fruit too small or it will turn mushy.

- Adding oats adds texture and fibre to this dessert.

- Different fruit will require different levels of sugar depending upon how sweet they are.
