Tomato sauce

This week you will be making a tomato sauce that can be used for pasta, serving with meat or vegetables, or putting onto a pizza. This sauce will enable you to use the hand blender, and see that homemade sauce is quick and easy to make, as well as being low in salt and sugar, but high in flavour. It can be made in large batches and then frozen for convenience.

Top Tips!

- Making sauces from scratch allows you to customise the flavours - you can add spices and herbs to your own taste.

- Do not add too much liquid or the sauce will be very thin and it will take a long time to evaporate away.

- Tinned tomatoes have a lot of flavour and are already cooked, so they speed up the cooking process. If you use fresh tomatoes, use very ripe ones, and remove the skins before use,

- When using the hand blender,  tilt the pan away from you, and ensure there is enough liquid in the sauce - the blender needs liquid to work correctly. Do not turn on the blender until it is in the sauce or it will splash you. Be careful!
